U.S. Internet Seachers

How Does Mobile Search Stack Up?

Google has been busy; Google is always busy. Now they've introduced a new tool to help us all determine some statistically significant data on the behavior of Internet searchers. Thanks to Google's Our Mobile Planet's data tool we have a nice picture of some of the search habits of U.S. Internet searchers relative to their age and device types used for searching.

As the graphs below demonstrate, people On The Go in the U.S. tend to use their smartphone devices more than anywhere else. Well DUH you might suggest! But take a look at the graph point to the left of this bit of information (either graph; the one on the left is of the general population of the U.S., the one on the right focused upon users 50 years old and older) - you will see that the number of people using smartphones at work is well over 50% of all smartphone users. What does this mean? Well, if you are trying to connect with your search audience, you've got a better than even chance of getting their attention on the phone at work as you do anywhere or any time else!

The most interesting element of the two graphs is the simple visual evidence of their flow. Notice how both graphs appear to have very similar upticks and downticks? What this means is that there are only small statistical differences in how U.S. Internet searchers behave based upon their age; at least when comparing the over 50 crowd with the total number of Internet searchers in the U.S. In other words, the predominate thinking that older generations of Americans shy away from smartphone usage to find and contact those they are looking for may not necessarily hold up to factual research. People are becoming more and more accepting of the newer technologies that only a few years ago were seen as strictly for the 12-30 crowd.
